How to Link Your Aadhaar with Your Bank Account
Linking Aadhaar to a bank account has become a routine step for anyone in India who wants to receive government subsidies directly, use certain UPI features smoothly, or complete KYC requirements many banks now expect. If you haven’t done it yet, or aren’t sure whether your existing account is already linked, here’s what the process actually involves.
Why banks ask for this
Aadhaar-linking mainly exists to support Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) — the system the government uses to credit subsidies, pensions, scholarships, and other benefits straight into a citizen’s bank account rather than through intermediaries. If your account isn’t Aadhaar-linked (or more precisely, “seeded” — linked to the specific account that should receive DBT payments), you may not receive certain government benefits even if you’re otherwise eligible, since the system won’t know which account to credit.
How to link it
There are several ways to do this, and you generally only need to use one:
- Through your bank’s mobile app or net banking — most major banks now have a self-service option under “Aadhaar linking” or “Update KYC,” where you enter your Aadhaar number and confirm via an OTP sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile number.
- At an ATM — many banks let you initiate Aadhaar linking directly from an ATM menu, using your debit card PIN plus an OTP.
- By visiting a branch — you can submit a filled linking form along with a copy of your Aadhaar card; this is the fallback option if you don’t have net banking access or your registered mobile number has changed.
- Via SMS — some banks support linking by sending a specifically formatted SMS to a designated number, though the exact format varies by bank.
How to check if it’s already linked
If you’re not sure whether a past linking attempt actually went through, you can check status through your bank’s net banking portal (usually under a “Aadhaar seeding status” or similar section), or through the UIDAI’s own portal, which lets you check which bank account is currently seeded for DBT against your Aadhaar number.
A few things to keep in mind
The mobile number registered with your Aadhaar needs to be active and accessible to you, since most linking methods rely on an OTP sent to it — if your Aadhaar-registered number has changed, you’ll likely need to update that with UIDAI first, or use the branch-visit method instead. Also, if you hold multiple bank accounts, only one account can be “seeded” for DBT purposes at a time — linking a new account for DBT typically de-seeds the previous one, so make sure you’re linking the account you actually want government payments credited to.
